This is a list of phrases I hear a lot that tell me when someone isn’t on board the Web 2.0 train yet:

10. “I don’t know about all this technology.”

9. “I don’t need to go on Twitter to know it’s useless.”

8. “Who cares what I had for breakfast?”

7. “I love Facebook. It gives me a huge database to work with.”

6. “I want to find customers – I don’t need to network with people I already know.”

5. “Can you just do it for me?”

4. “It’s been 3 weeks – what do the numbers look like?”

3. “I need to spend my workday doing things that actually help my business.”

2. “What does it matter? Nobody’s reading this stuff anyway.”

1. “Get 2000 followers in just minutes! http://bit.ly/dfhjslkfhjdsalj”

Look – if any of these is you (#1 excluded), it doesn’t mean that you’re hopeless or dumb; but know that Social Media isn’t going to go away just because you want it to. If you’re confused, ask for help. If you want to integrate social media into your business, actually integrate it and have a specific strategy and goals for the tools you’re using. Take it in bite-sized amounts and create a budget for the time you plan to spend.

When you come at it from a comprehensive point of view, the impossible becomes possible.

  • Hal - I don't really have anything to add. I do think Twitter needs to change it's "What are you doing?" tagline...it's not quite that anymore. At first, it was a bit too much of "I am eating cheerios on my couch," but it definitely has evolved (and has actually brought business my way).

P.S. In an odd coincidence - I've used that photo before for a blog.
  • Matt - I agree with you about the tagline; I would imagine it makes the process of sharing more simple for people who are knew.

I HATED twitter when I first joined; it made no sense to me, and the people I was following were more interested in telling about the minutiae of their lives than talking to me or anyone else who was following them. I think we evolved more than Twitter did.

P.P.S. - I loved that pic as soon as I saw it. What post did you use it for? I'd love to read it!
